Vanessa Selbst Takes Down NAPT Mohegan Sun Main Event!

April 14, 2010

The 3rd stop on Season 1 of the PokerStars.net North American Poker Tour -aka the NAPT –  brought online phenoms and live players alike to the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. In addition to the several side events that were being offered as part of the experience, the $5K buy-in Main Event was the big draw that brought in the most amount of players. With ESPN camera crews at the ready to film the action, play got underway just several days ago at the featured event.

After getting down to the final nine, a familiar face was knocked out on the bubble in Vanessa Rousso, and another Vanessa was quick to take her place as she would take over the chip lead going into the final table.  Vanessa Selbst, a major online poker pro and instructor (this chick is the real deal at $550+ an hour folks, lol), used her aggressive play to roll over her opponents en route to an 8 to 1 chip advantage when it got down to heads up play.  It only took a few hands before her Ace-High (A 8 os) held over the Queen-High (Q T) of Mike Beasley – as the board would brick out after they shoved it in before the flop.

Selbst took home a whopping a $750,000 for her efforts and solidified herself as one of the top up-and-coming women poker players in the game today.

Carbon Poker Now Offering 35% Rakeback.

April 13, 2010

Carbon Poker and all Merge Network skins are now offering 35% rakeback to new players who sign up and register an account with the site.

This is more amazing news for the Merge family of poker rooms and players, especially when you consider that the player base of Carbon Poker will be seeing some HUGE traffic in the coming months with the addition of Sportsbook.com and PlayersOnly to their network recently.

The recent moves by Merge signify that they’re now ready to compete with the bigger time poker sites such as PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, as a merge as big as this one probably isn’t just for shits and giggles.  Carbon Poker will be packing some serious punch now, and with 35% rakeback to offer it’s no wonder why the traffic has been hitting some big numbers in the last week.

‘Chiquita’ Wins $100K Guaranteed Tournament at Bodog

October 14, 2009

Online poker rooms are quite busy on the weekends due to the various guaranteed poker tournaments that take place. Bodog Poker offers players a $100,000 Guaranteed tournament every weekend and this weekend’s tournament was won by online player ‘Chiquita’.

The $100,000 guaranteed tournament at Bodog has a buy-in of $150 plus 12 but players can earn their seat via satellite at Bodog if they so choose. This can be the better route for a player who does not have the largest bank roll. Qualifiers start as low as $1 so anyone can afford to try for a seat to the $100k tournament.

This past Sunday 441 players registered to compete in the tournament. The tournament did not see enough players to reach the $100,000 guaranteed prize pool so Bodog added $33,850 to meet the guarantee. The tournament takes place each Sunday at 4:00pm ET. The top three players of this past weekend’s tournament were ‘Chiquita’, ‘ello’ and ‘O Mother Muc’.

Play would tough and ‘O Mother Muc’ would be the first to go so ‘Chiquita’ and ‘ello’ would begin competing in heads up play. The game belonged to ‘Chiquita’ as he would finish in first place after taking out ‘ello’. ‘Chiquita’ is no stranger to the final table of the $100k guaranteed tournament as he made the final table of the tournament just a few months ago.

Final Results:
Chiquita – $25,000
ello – $15,000
O Mother Muc – $9,500
blwm – $7,000
pokerarg – $5,500
stareblankly – $4,500
Tommy2tyme – $3,500
L_Dub8 – $2,200
DATALINFR – $1,700

Shock Jock Howard Stern Joins The PPA.

July 21, 2009

Love him or hate him, Howard Stern is a strong voice in radio broadcasting. Stern will now be lending his loud voice to the cause of online poker. It was recently announced that Howard Stern has become a member of the Poker Players Alliance.

Chairman of the PPA and former senator, Alfonse D’Amato commented: “I can’t think of a more fitting way to kick off National Poker Week than having my friend, Howard Stern, become a member of the PPA. I thank him for having me on his show this morning and for supporting the PPA’s efforts to protect the freedom of American citizens to play the great game of poker at a time and place of their choosing- a freedom Congress voted to take away.”

The Senator along with many others will be taking an online poker petition to Washington to lobby lawmakers to change the Internet gambling laws in the United States. The PPA launched the poker petition website a few weeks ago when they announced the dates for National Poker Week. The petition currently has just over 350,000 signatures and hopefully by July 22nd the petition will have many more. The 22nd is when the petition will be given to president Obama.

Howard Stern is very popular as a shock jock and it should help the PPA by having the publicity that Howard Stern can bring to the cause. Hopefully enough attention will be gained by Stern’s joining the group that it helps make a difference when those representing the poker community visit Washington.

Leo Margets Earns “Last Woman Standing” Trophy at WSOP.

July 16, 2009

Leo Margets of Barcelona was the last woman standing at the 2009 World Series of Poker Main Event for some time before she was knocked out in twenty seventh place. When she was eliminated she was presented with the Last Woman Standing Trophy courtesy of Wicked Chops Poker.

Marget won $352,832 for her 27th place finish after she was eliminated by Warren Zackey when she went all in with A-7. She was called by Zackey who held A-10 and the board did not give Marget the cards so she was eliminated.

Margets was proud to earn the trophy even though some believe it is a sexist move. The trophy includes the names of all the last women standing in each of the WSOP past events. The following ladies earned the award:

1986 – Wendeen Eolis (25th)

1993 – Marsha Waggoner (19th)

1994 – Barbara Samuelson (10th)

1995 – Barbara Enright (5th)

1996 – Lucy Rokach (26th)

1997 – Marsha Waggoner (12th)

1998 – Susie Isaacs (10th)

2000 – Annie Duke (10th)

2003 – Annie Duke (47th)

2004 – Rose Richie (98th)

2005 – Tiffany Williamson (15th)

2006 – Sabyl Cohen-Landrum (56th)

2007 – Maria Ho (38th)

2008 – Tiffany Michelle (17th)

Hopefully one day there will be no need for a Last Woman Standing trophy as a woman will win the World Series of Poker Main Event.

Brian Townsend Admits to Multi-Accounting.

Full Tilt Pro Admits To Multiple Poker Account Usage.

Brian Townsend, also known as ‘sbrugby‘ in the online poker world, admitted this week on his Cardrunners blog that he is guilty of using multiple accounts!

This is an excerpt from his blog explaining himself:

For the past 6 months I have been playing under the 2nd aliases Stellarnebula on FTP and makersmark66 on PokerStars.  I have not used the aba20 account on Stars since I began playing on the Makersmark66 account.  I have since gone back to using the aba20 account and will play only that account.  During this time I played the 25/50 and 100/200 PLO games.  I played under the Stellarnebula account from February until the end of June at which time Lee Jones and I had a discussion and we came to an agreement that I needed to close it.  During this time I was playing under the Brian Townsend account, never at the same table with the Stellarnebula.  Under the Stellarnebula account I played 25/50, 50/100, and 100/200 PLO.  During this time I played a very small amount of 50/100 PLO and primarily 200/400 PLO under the Brian Townsend account.
